In 2015, New Zealand born Wyatt Hautonga was busy finding band members instead of taking his studies in audio engineering seriously. During this time, he wrote and recorded the songs that would make up In Transition (2018), a collection of immediate, unflinching demos which would lay the foundation for what would become an unmistakable, inimitable Techno Westerns sound.
By 2018, Wyatt had moved to Toronto while recording Kia Ora EP (2019) and Memento Mori (2020). These recordings explored 1980s pop grandeur and examined themes such as isolation, desperation, and tales of late-night debauchery. Techno Westerns explored these themes further with an added level of maturity on Lover Boy (2021), a frizzy and flippant pop opus that saw the band come into it's own both creatively and musically.
Coming off a busy summer filled with sold out shows, a NXNE appearance and a headlining slot at Horseshoe Tavern in 2022, Techno Westerns came back in 2023 even bigger.
With the release of their dark and poppy reinvention on Midnight EP (2023) revitalisingly summery sounds on Dusk EP (2023) and book ending it all with a fuzzy and driven sound selection on Evening EP (2023), the band went out on their self booked and self promoted Do It Ourselves Tour, which was kickstarted with a headlining show at Lee's Palace.
Releasing Post Meridiem (2024) at the start of the year, the band followed up by dropping Without A Trace (2024), the first single off their soon to be released EP titled manic. (2024). With a tour planned for later this year, and song placement in the newly released In A Violent Nature (2024), Techno Westerns are ready to return in bigger than and better than ever.
